I will tell them, Of course, I would think that it is important to have good opinion of God but something is wrong if we tell people to keep good opinion of God instead of keeping God's commandments. You could have given the wrong commandment to the people or given the wrong impression or teaching about God's commandments. We would definitely not be able to find anywhere in the Bible that tells us God is more pleased because we keep good opinion of Him rather than keep His commandments.
Which will please God - have good opinion of God or keep God's commandments?
However, we would find the following words of the Lord which tell us to keep and do God's will or God's words - God's will for us is to keep His commandments. His will never change. It is the same in the Old Testament as well as in the New Testament. It is to keep the commandments of His covenant.
- Exo 19:5 KJV Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
- Tit 2:10-15 KJV Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. (11) For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, (12) Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; (13) Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; (14) Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (15) These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
- Heb 8:10 KJV For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
- Mat 7:12-23 KJV Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (13) Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: .. (15) Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (16) Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? .. (21) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? (23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (24) Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
- Luk 6:46-48 KJV And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? (47) Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: (48) He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood (false doctrine) arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. (Hence, Jesus said clearly that He would not just want us to have right believing, right faith, right miracles, right preaching, or right confession only; he wants us to have right doing with His words too, because right doing would prove that we are His true disciples on the rock of salvation.)
- Joh 14:21-30 KJV He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. (22) Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? (23) Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. (24) He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. .. (30) Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. (31) But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
- by just confessing the name of Jesus Christ and having good opinion of God, even if they will rebel and preach against God's commandments
- by lying and twisting God's words.
- Luk 18:10-14 KJV Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. (11) The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. (12) I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. (13) And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. (14) I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
- Mar 7:6-13 KJV He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. (7) Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (8) For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. (9) And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. (10) For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: (11) But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. (12) And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; (13) Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
- Mat 15:6 KJV And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
They will argue, "But God did say, Jesus will teach us. Grace will teach us to obey God. We don't have to teach them to obey this and that or do this and that. Grace is a better teacher who will teach us. Grace can do a better job when it comes to teaching and keeping God's commandments. Grace has made our job easier. Hence, we, the preachers of God, would just need to teach others to have good opinion of God. Of course, we have the basis from the Bible when we say this. Please read the following Bible verses again:
- Heb 8:10-11 KJV (10) .. I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: (11) And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
- Tit 2:10-15 KJV Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. (11) For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, (12) Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; ..
I will tell them, Did you read it carefully ? Yes, Heb 8:11 did say '.. they shall not teach every man.. saying, Know the Lord.' But it did not say, '.. they shall not teach every man God's doctrine or God's commandment.' Obviously God would still want us to teach all men God's doctrine and God's commandments. Yes, Tit 2:11-12 did say 'For the grace of God .. (12) Teaching us ..' But Tit 2:1 told us that it was 'sound doctrine' which began all the teaching in Tit 2 including the teaching of grace. It tells us speak, and exhort, and rebuke, and of course, to teach too.
- Tit 2:1-15 KJV But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: .. (10) Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. (11) For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, (12) Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; .. (14).. that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (15) These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
Have they kept God's commandments ?
They will say, "Oh, you have misunderstood us. We have never rejected God's commandments. We did tell people to keep God's commandments too, but we said it in a different way. It is a better way to keep God's commandments. We teach grace and grace will put the law of God into the hearts of men. We have also sung Psalm 1 and Psalm 34 about obeying God's laws. So, please don't falsely accused us as lawless preachers.."
I will tell them, Having preaching against God's commandment or twisted the words of God, do you think that you can find your way out of your lawlessness ? The only way out is to repent; not through arguments and evasive confessions. We have not misunderstood you because we know that you have cunningly changed God's commandment (of teaching, keeping, and doing His commandments) into your commandment (of just having good opinion of Him).
Do we have to please God? If we want to please God, what's wrong if we just simply tell others to keep God's commandments ? Why must we go one big round by telling people to do something else to please God, like listening to grace, confessing grace, or thinking of the righteousness of God instead ?
- 1Jn 3:21-24 KJV Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. (22) And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. (23) And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. (24) And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
Have they taught God's words or God's commandments with integrity ?
I will ask them, Have you taken a bus or a train at the public place before ? Have you seen young people who did not give up their seats to the older folks ? Yes. However, we have also seen many young people who gave up their seats to the old folks too. Now can we conclude that all our young people and children have been well taught because most of them would give up their seats to the old folks, and therefore, we would not need to teach our children any more, or that we would not need to teach them to give up their seats to the older folks, that we will just show our goodness and our love to them, and our goodness and love will lead them to do the right things when they grow up. No, it would be ridiculous if all our educators or teachers would adopt this type of philosophies.
However, this is exactly what the preachers told us today. They argued that we will just need to show the people God's goodness or God's love, and God's goodness will lead them to do the right things when they are in Christ. I will tell them, Please think about the simple logic, Do you agree that there are still Christians who are like children ? They could be young and immature like the children, even though they could have accepted the Lord. They may not be just inconsiderate to the old folks; but they may also sin or live in sins ignorantly. Of course, they would still need to be taught. However, the irony is: many 'believers' today will still need to be told to repent or go back to the fundamental (but important) principles of repentance, faith, and resurrection, when they ought to be teachers by now:
- Heb 5:12-14 KJV For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. (13) For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. (14) But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Heb 6:1-2 KJV Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, (2) Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
- 1Co 3:1-3 KJV And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. (2) I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. (3) For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
- 1Pe 2:1-3 KJV Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, (2) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: (3) If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
- 2Ti 3:15-17 KJV And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (17) That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
- Mar 7:11-13 KJV But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. (12) And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; (13) Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
- Mat 15:6-9 KJV And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. (7) Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, (8) This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. (9) But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Please think, Would you listen to them
and give up your seats to the old folks too if they themselves would never
give up their seats ? No. They can never be good teachers if they have no strong conviction, or no clear intention, to keep what they teach. Very likely they are just trying to give the false impression that they are obedient servants in front of others like the Pharisees.
Have they given plenty of excuses not to teach God's words and commandments ?
They will argue, "If we need to teach with integrity or keep God's commandments, many pastors would not be qualified. But Jesus knew that no one is qualified. That's why He made it easier for us. He has made us qualified. We will no longer need to keep God's commandments to be a qualified teacher. When more believers are qualified to become teachers, people will just learn more and learn better.."
However, I will doubt so. Please look at the Pharisees who taught the Jews to obey God but they would never keep God's commandments. Do you think that they were good teachers ? No. Jesus has never told us that we can be His good servants or good pastors if we rebel and change His commandments.
Radical grace preachers will say, "So, do you think that you can teach us ? However, have you kept ALL God's commandments ? Do you lust for women ? Do you watch pornography ? Do you gamble or buy lotteries ? Do you litter around ? Do you eat meat or kill the animals ? Do you lie ? Do you keep your own belongings and money and refuse to share with others ? If you have done any of these, you are not fit to teach us too."
I will tell them, Yes, we admit that we will still sin and we may not be perfect. We are not good teachers. We cannot teach very well too. But we have the conviction to teach and to correct our students or children with God's words, God's commandments, and the Lord's teaching:
- Yes, we may not teach them not to lust very well (because we lust within), but we can teach them not to commit adultery.
- Yes, we may not teach them not to be greedy very successfully (because we still covet within), but we can teach them not to steal.
- Yes, we may not teach them not to be angry very effectively (because we still rage within), but we can teach them not to harm others
We will never throw in the towel and tell our children, "Since not one of us can keep God's commandments, therefore, no one can teach you. Only God can teach you." No. Do you know what kind of people we will raise if we would just say that no one can teach them ? It would be tragedy for the next generation. We are giving them the false impression that, "Since God's commandments and family values are so difficult to keep and no one can keep any of them, you don't have to keep any of them too." Yes, I would think that that is the message some preachers could have subtly given to our children today whenever they said without much thinking that, "Only God, Jesus Christ, or Grace can teach you because no one can keep God's commandments !"
That's why I would never tell my students or children, "No one can teach you. Only God can teach you." However, we will always strive to become their role model or moral example even though we know that we may not be perfectly qualified. We would never do like the Pharisees, give them the popular man's beliefs or lawless doctrines, and teach them to keep nothing and do nothing.
Have they set the right criteria for the people who will teach our children ?
They will argue, "Of course, we are under grace. Jesus has kept all the commandments for us so that we don't have to keep any of them. Otherwise, how can anyone of us teach others to do God's commandments ? You said earlier that you will still teach your students and children to keep God's laws because:
- you would not commit adulteries
- you would not steal
- you would not harm others
However, if you have committed the above or if you are a con-man, a cheat, or a gangster, can you still teach ?"I will tell them, Of course, any adulterers, prostitutes, gigolos, gamblers, gangsters, smugglers, criminals, or crooks can still teach and become pastors or role models for our children, but they must have repented. Otherwise, I would rather advise them to give others the opportunities to teach or to be pastors of our children. We do not need to please everyone or give everyone the false impression that, under grace, EVERYONE is righteous enough to teach or preach:
- 1Ti 3:1-9 KJV This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. (2) A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; (3) Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; (4) One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (5) (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) (6) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. (7) Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. (8) Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; (9) Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
- Jas 3:1 LITV My brothers do not be many teachers, knowing that we will receive greater judgment.
- Hence, I would certainly not advise the churches to appoint anyone, any adulterers, any prostitutes, or any gamblers, who believe or who are under grace, to teach. However, they must have believed, repented, and taken up their cross.
- Mar 1:14-15 KJV Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, (15) And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
The Bible did not tell us that we can never sin or never need to repent
They will argue, "But the Bible are full of Bible verses that those who believe in Jesus will no longer sin because they have become the children of the light. We will all walk in the light. I did not say so; the Bible said so. If this is so, why do we still preach repentance or teach people to confess sins or to repent from their sins ?"
I will tell them, Yes, we are called the children of the light. But are we there already ? No, we are still in the world of darkness and we can still sin or fall into it. However, if we have fallen, we can still rise up because of the grace of God:
- Eph 5:6-10 KJV Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. (7) Be not ye therefore partakers with them. (8) For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (9) (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) (10) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
- 1Th 5:4-9 KJV But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. (5) Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. (6) Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. (7) For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. (8) But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. (9) For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 1Jn 1:7-10 KJV But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (8) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (10) If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1Jn 2:1 KJV My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: (I will tell the radical grace preachers, Obviously John was not writing to the agnostics here; but to the believers and sinners who would repent. John would never write to the agnostics that they should not sin. Why ? It's the agnostic would never be intersted to listen to John or read His letters. If they were agnostic, they would never believe or listen to John, or even God.)
- Act 20:27-32 KJV For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. (28) Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. (29) For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. (30) Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. (31) Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. (32) And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Do we just preach why people should be under grace without preaching of repentance?
They will argue again, "Under law, we cannot ... but under grace, we can ...; Under law, we are not ..., but under grace, we are... Hence, we must come to God under grace.. the more we come, the more we are forgiven. Hence, the more you come, the more you will live, the more you will shine, the more you will .."
I will tell them, Yes, you may have argued and preached all the right doctrines for 'under law, we cannot... but under grace, we can do this and that ..' and quote all the right Bible verses, but what's the use if you have deliberately omitted the most important fundamental truth from your preaching ie. repentance ? Do you know that 'the more you come, the more you are forgiven' can never happen unless you repent ? Yes, you may preach beautifully and make great comparison between law and grace, but what's the use if all your sinners who think that they are 'under grace' do not hear the preaching of repentance or know the importance of repentance. Yes, you may argue that they will repent automatically, but that's your presumption when you have no conviction to preach any repentance. Jesus has commanded us to preach repentance. Hence, it is not an Old Testament concept; repentance is a gift to the sinners for the remission of their sins. It is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Luk 24:45-47 KJV Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, .. (47) And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
- Act 2:38-39 KJV Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (39) For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off (and to all of us in the future who will repent), even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
- 1Jn 3:4 LITV Everyone practicing sin also practices lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.
We need to preach repentance because most people are under lawlessness; not under the law
They will argue, "How about the legalistic believers who believe in the law ? Many of them still believe in 'do good get good'. Don't you think that they are under the law ?"
I will tell them, This is ridiculous. Just because they believe in living godly lives or doing good, they can be under the law ? Paul believed in doing good and living godly lives too; was he under the law ? No. In fact, Paul did not just believe in doing good, he taught us to obey God and do good too.
- Eph 6:1-3 KJV Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. (2) Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) (3) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
- 1Ti 6:14-19 KJV That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: .. (17) Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; (18) That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; (19) Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
- Tit 2:7 KJV In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, .. (14) Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (15) These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
- Yes, Paul and many traditional believers may be still under God's law or commandment to worship God, honour their parents, and do good; but
- they would never be under 'the law' (or the Old covenant) to do the works of the law, eg the works of the ceremonial law, the circumcision, the animal sacrifice, the temple rituals, .. etc.
